Marc Jacobs "Petra" Nail Polish Review + Swatches

I may be a little late but I totally jumped on the Marc Jacobs Beauty bandwagon a few weeks ago when I purchased a gorgeous metallic plum shade named “Petra.”
The entire Marc Jacobs nail polish line comes in these really unique bottles that I can only describe as being squoval. They’re not quite square yet they’re not quite round, much like everyone’s favorite nail shape back in the day. The bottle also features a removable lid that allows you to easily hold the brush when polishing your nails. Be warned, though, the bottle can’t be opened without first removing the outer lid! I expected this to perform much like other polish brands where you can choose whether or not to remove it but, as pictured below, the Marc Jacobs nail polish has a little lip where the whole package sort of locks together.
I was initially drawn to this shade because it’s absolutely perfect for fall while giving a fun little twist in the form of silver and gold micro glitter. It looks absolutely gorgeous in the bottle but I was just slightly disappointed in the way that it translated on to the nail. In some light it looked like a gorgeous, rich plum while in others the silver shimmer really took over. I just wasn’t a fan of the highly reflective silver micro-glitter. Because of the micro-glitter it also felt slightly grainy when when I was applying the polish to my nail, almost like I could feel sand dragging underneath the brush. Petra definitely isn’t the smoothest polish around but I found once I topped it with Seche Vite (my favorite topcoat) everything was fine.
In the bottle pictures above you can see how reflective the shimmer can get and how it takes away from the plum base.
From Left to Right: Marc Jacobs Petra after 3 coats, 2 coats, and 1 coat. All topped with Seche Vite.
This is the only polish I’ve tried from the Marc Jacobs line so I can’t speak for them all but I did get awesome wear time out of Petra. I wore it for a straight week with minimal tip wear and only noticed chips 5 days in.
Overall I love the idea of this color but I’m not totally sold strictly because of the silver micro-glitter that stole the show. I’ll definitely be trying out some other Marc Jacobs nail polish, though!
Until next time
