Summer is here (much to my dismay, haha!) and Ruby Wing is celebrating with 6 new color changing nail polish shades released with their “The Wicked West” collection. While this collection isn’t exactly what I think of when I think “summer” (I’m more in the neon mindset this time of year) I love that each bottle has a color changing formula that really allows you to get 12 colors from 6 bottles! It’s always fun to do Ruby Wing swatches because the color shift is just so unique!
The Wicked West collection consists of 3 cream finish polishes, one micro-shimmer, and two jelly based glitters that each change color when exposed to sunlight. The formula on the cream finishes was absolutely flawless and applied perfectly with two coats and no issues. Each and every time I use one of these polishes I am just so blown away by the formula because it’s really great! The jelly glitters, though, are a little thick for my liking. Honestly I think that’s just because I’m not a jelly polish fan in general… so take that for what you will. Are they typical of standard jelly nail polish formulas? Absolutely.
Let’s get into swatches, shall we?
As I mentioned before each color in The Wicked West collection is designed to change color when exposed to sunlight and each color has an example of what the outcome will be on the lid. It’s important to note that these will ONLY change when exposed to sunlight and will not change color when exposed to indoor lighting, fluorescent lighting, or even when it’s overly cloudy outside.
Saloon Sweetheart starts off as a beautiful coral when indoors but then transitions to a deep berry red color once out in the sunlight. I think this is my favorite shade out of the collection because it is absolutely gorgeous both in and out of the sunlight!
Wanted Dead or Alive is a gorgeous blue with an ever so slight micro-shimmer that applies flawlessly and is opaque after two coats. This is the only polish in this collection that didn’t have such a noticeable color shift. It did get a touch deeper but honestly if I wasn’t looking for the shift I probably wouldn’t have noticed. It’s still a gorgeous blue, isn’t it?
Tumbleweeds isn’t a color that I would normally reach for but this gorgeous chartreuse cream polish is my second favorite of the collection. I loved that it went on smooth and opaque in two coats but I loved the fact that it changed so drastically in the sunlight as well. Both colors are gorgeous and so unique!
Rodeo is a neon mint green with a cream finish that also didn’t shift appropriately in the sun. It was more noticeable than Wanted Dead or Alive was but according to the label on the bottle it was supposed to shift to a light orange in the sun. As you can see it turned into a light yellow/green instead. If I didn’t know what it was supposed to turn into I’d be totally happy with this color shift but I’m wishing that I saw more of the orange. I’ll give it another try and see what happens! The formula on this one was, like the others, absolutely perfect.
Back On The Saddle is the first of two jelly glitters from this collection that I tried and starts off as a light champagne gold that transitions to a bright orange in the sunlight. The formula on this one was, like I mentioned before, typical of jelly polish but I thought it was on the thick side. I was really happy with the way it shifted to orange, though!
Ride ’em Cowgirl is the color I’m probably the most impressed by from this collection. Even though I’m not a jelly polish lover I am amazed at the fact that it changes color so drastically in the sun! I also really love the fact that the glitter coverage is so opaque after two coats (you know how glitter goes sometimes… 10 coats later).
